     School Council @ DG

    Who are we?

    • At Deptford Green our School Council is a really important part of school life.
    • We meet regularly to discuss key issues in the school and help to make suggestions and improvements.
    • The council is made up of members from each year group.
    • To join the school council we completed an application explaining why we wanted to join. We were then interviewed by other school council members. The successful candidates were invited to join the council.
    • Many school council representatives continue in their roles throughout their time at DG, but there are often opportunities for new members to get involved too.

    How does it work?

    • Our School Council motto is ‘see, hear, do’.
    • Our role is to be the eyes and ears of the students in the school and to give them voice in important decisions and issues for the school and local community.
    • We regularly speak to students across the school in tutor times to hear their views and also get feedback through online questionnaires. In our last survey to students we gathered over 400 responses!
    • We meet twice a half-term do discuss key issues and work together help put actions in place to make the school better.
    • We attend the senior leadership team meetings once per term where the leaders are keen to hear our views. We also feedback to school governors once a year.

    What have we achieved?

We are proud that at Deptford Green, student voice matters. Feedback from students has directly contributed to positive changes in school and in the wider community. Some of our achievements are:

    • We met with representatives from Lewisham Council and discussed areas for improvement around Fordham Park. Following this the council put a pelican crossing in place to make us safer on our journeys to and from school.
    • We gathered student voice on the uniform policy in our school and took it to leaders. As a result of our work the school changed the uniform policy to make blazers optional and to allow black trainers. This has made everyone feel more comfortable and has made the uniform more affordable.
    • We have provided feedback on how the playground could be improved which helped with the planning of new facilities introduced in the summer of 2025.
    • We go on regular trips to experience democracy in action. We have visited the London Assembly and the Houses of Parliament.
    • We have take part in lots of workshops including anti-racism training.
    • We are helping the school to complete its bid to become a Rights Respecting School.
