The Physical Education department at Deptford Green has tasted success across a variety of sports this academic year. Several girls and boys’ football teams from year 7-11 reached the knock out stages of either the Blackheath cup or inner London competitions with standout performances from Melisha (7), Romoy (7), Alan (7), Kaemon (8), Trevon (9) and Filipe (10). The football season was capped off with a trip to the EFS football tournament in Bognor Regis where year 7 and 8 students performed to their best ability.
The reintroduction of basketball to the school has been a real success, where year 7,8 and 10 boys have fulfilled several fixtures against other schools in the borough. Girls’ basketball has been introduced as a GCSE practical option and the club is growing in numbers weekly. Girls’ fitness has seen an increase in participation where the club is often populated with girls from each year group.
Girls’ handball has continued to be one of the most popular extra-curricular clubs where girls from all year groups attend. The high numbers at training resulted in two handball fixtures where Deptford Green won both with standout performances from Gladys and Mia in year 7.
Deptford Green also entered National Indoor Rowing Competitions where students from year 7 and 8 competed at the highest level possible for indoor rowing.
As the winter sports came to an end, the popularity of extra-curricular clubs did not. The summer clubs were incredibly popular with cricket, athletics and trampolining clubs being added to the extra- curricular programme. Deptford Green School tasted success at the Lewisham Borough Athletics Tournament where Kyle (7), Delvecchio (9) and Aritson (9) all took Gold medals in their respective events and progressed to competing at the London Schools’ Games for the Borough of Lewisham.
The Physical Education department could not have run as smoothly without this year’s Sport Leaders. All leaders have played a significant and important role in the success of the department this year. The Sport Leaders completed a successful year by running the Grinling Gibbons Primary School Sports Day which Deptford Green hosted on site.
The Physical Education department capped off a successful year with a trip to Wimbledon Tennis Club where 24 students got to watch world class tennis players compete at one of the most prestigious tournaments in world tennis.
All in all, a very successful year!
