HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

Image of the headteacher Ms Thurston
HEADTEACHER: MS THURSTON

Last week we were blown away by the outpouring of support and love for Mr Couzins who sadly passed away last week. Joe has been a PE teacher here at Deptford Green for 14 years as well as a much loved Head of Year. Joe cared deeply for the students and school and his passion and enthusiasm for sport and teaching young people was hugely inspiring. His loss will be felt immensely by all of us.

On Friday we were overwhelmed by the turnout of ex-students who came along to show their respects for Joe during a quiet candle lit vigil. Many of our younger students were sharing their stories of football success with him as their coach and other older students were regaling us with memories of the Butlins football tournaments which Joe organised. Many of our staff were close friends with Joe on a personal level and the way the school community pulled together so well in a time of high distress and sadness was commendable and made me incredibly proud.

We will be working with our staff and students to plan more events to remember Mr Couzins, details of which we will share with you in due course.

As you know there are plans for further strike action next Month - I will share our plans for those days after half-term but wanted to thank you for your support so far. The year 11’s who did attend school last Wednesday worked really hard and made great progress across a range of subject areas.

As ever, despite the sadness that has fallen over the school, there are still a huge number of events taking place this week. We hope to see many young people audition for our whole school production ‘Our House’ and we wonder who will win the Year 7 & 8 table tennis tournament on Tuesday? Year 8’s will experience the Animals of the Rainforest in Geography lessons later this week and many of our Year 10 students will have the opportunity to experience uni life with a visit to Cambridge University.

This half-term has been eventful for so many reasons. We hope all of our school community will be able to make the time next week for some much-needed rest and to return rejuvenated for another busy half-term of learning and enrichment opportunities.

Heads of Faculty will be available between 4 and 6 pm to showcase work from all options available to students.  They will also be available to answer any questions you might have about them. On the same evening, Pathways interviews will be scheduled.  These can be booked via SchoolCloud and will be sent out following the Year 9 parents evening. The interviews will be 10 minutes long. By this point, you should have read through the options booklet and your child’s school report.  The report was sent by email last week and indicates which pathway your child is recommended for.

At the last Parents Evening, the Business & Enterprise group were busy employing all the sales techniques they have been learning with Mr Aniagwu to sell the candles they have been making.  From all accounts they have been using all sorts of methods to produce candles and get you to part with your cash!  They were VERY successful and have raised over £130 so far and plan to be at this event so do be prepared to meet the Y10 sales crew!  They can be very persuasive and accept both cash and cards but not IOU's (I tried and failed!) You have been warned!

THIS WEEK AT SCHOOL WE BEGIN TO CELEBRATE LGBTQIA+ HISTORY MONTH

Scene from Shakespeare

Individuals throughout history have lived radical private lives outside the accepted sexual and gender norms of the time. However, LGBTQ+ history is often hidden from view. Expression of same-sex love and gender non-conformity has been constrained by both repressive social attitudes and criminal persecution. The few first-hand accounts made of LGBTQ+ experience were often destroyed for self-protection.

By uncovering the LGBTQ+ stories that have survived, researchers can start to represent the true diversity of sexuality and gender in the history of England. Find out more about the lives of England’s LGBTQ+ people and their important place in the stories of English Heritage sites. (Extract from English Heritage)

DEBATE MATE WITH MR RAMSAY

It was an amazing event! Our year 7 students took on a group of students from another school. The year 7's involved were; Ashlee, Orson, Wesley, Anna, Hepzibah, Efeosa and Joshua. These year 7s have regularly been attending our school’s Debate Mate Club which runs every Tuesday and have been gradually mastering their debating skills and in the process, socialising with others, embedding our school’s GREAT and LORIC skills.

On Tuesday 23rd of January, they visited St Georges Catholic School in Maida Vale W1. They were invited to attend a Novice League Debating Competition. They were signed up to compete in 2 rounds of prestigious debating.  No one knew what the topics would be until the day of arrival and then they only had 10 minutes to prepare once the topic was announced.

Our year 7s made good use of their time during the preparation. The use of mobile phones was not permitted by the organisers. Orson showed fantastic leadership setting up the team in order of execution. Everyone was fully prepared within minutes. No notes were made for the first round, despite them being allowed to use them. What confidence they had and what a team! I was so proud of them.

The topic was 'Should The Government Make Maths Compulsory Until 18 Years of Age?'

Deptford Green was given the proposition stance and the other school was given the opposition. What do you think would be the natural stance to argue from? Whatever side of the argument you're on, our year 7s were not deterred or phased by the challenge.

Orson spoke first reciting Sunak’s Maths proposal. The opposition countered smoothly. Our second speaker, Joshua manoeuvred his hands in a very professional manner, looking the opposition right in the eyes. However, the opposition was not defeated and came back with good  interjections. It looked like our year 7s had lost their heads – well almost. Orson’s plan came back into the mix to steady them. Our third speaker was Anna, projecting her voice, demanding all to listen. You could see the referee’s eyes lit up whilst Anna put her points across. Efeosa  walked back and forth with words spilling out eloquently. He was precise with his thoughts and reverted back to the initial message in order to keep the talk on topic. Would this be enough?

Yes, it was!  Year 7s won the first round, and what a round indeed! Our year 7s were in shock as they thought they had lost. Why? Because one opponent from the opposition had counteracted some very good points on several occasions. However, our year 7s worked together as a team and learned much from the experience.

They went on to the next round facing a mix of year 7 and 8s this time. The question was 'Should the Monarchy be Abolished?'  Deptford Green was the opposition, and their opponents were the proposition. Another difficult task for our year 7s. How did they do… sadly they lost the second round by 1 point! However, it is possible that they will still be entered for the finals.  Watch this space!

SPORT

On Friday 20th January, the Year 7 football team played Acland Burghley School in what turned out to be a thrilling football match. With two excellent goals from Henry (the latter accompanied by a rather amusing goal celebration) and particularly courageous defending from Zuka, the team excelled throughout. A particular highlight of the match was an exceptional point-blank save from goalkeeper Isiah after a looping free kick had deflected towards the goal. Equally impressive was Julian’s tireless work ethic throughout.

Despite eventually losing the match, the team showed tremendous sprit - a facet noticed by the opposition’s coach. I look forward to watching this team develop and improve in the next few months. Onto the next game!

Thank you Mr George!  We look forward to hearing all about it...

Austin Daboh, Vice President of Atlantic Records UK in conversation with Deptford Green students

Austin Daboh Vice President of Atlantic Records

We were privileged to welcome Austin Daboh for an insightful talk and Q&A about the music industry.

Austin took us through his career journey from BBC Radio 1 Extra and onto Spotify and Apple Music and now his role as Vice President of Atlantic Records UK. Austin generously shared his story, starting out as a young man from Woolwich South East London with a passion for music at a time when the UK Garage and Rap scene was exploding , working in retail and building work experience with smaller music companies.

He explained that in his previous and current roles, he is still enjoying listening to music and going to gigs and thinking about how to grow talents. He also looks at and analyses data and can get into interesting discussions with his team about new music and artist to sign.

So there you are, this is where attending Debate Club and doing Music and Business GCSES could lead to!

At the event we were lucky to be joined by one of our wonderful alumni, Katie, who opened the event at the piano with one of her latest songs. Katie is now a Music Prformance student at Access Creative College in Shoreditch where, as well as continuing to craft her own songs, she is also collaborating with other young people and leading a band.

Austin had some brilliant tips for all young people in the audience, whether they are aspiring artists and creatives, students more interested in the business side of the industry or with different career interests. He talked about perseverance and the importance of being polite, punctual, and having a vision.

We would like to thank Austin for coming to Deptford Green and sharing his absolute passion for Music and for his warm encouragement.

Hope to see him again very soon and we will leave you with a quote from a student who said:

“ I loved seeing and hearing from a successful person who looks like me”

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & CARERS

TAKE A LOOK HERE. CLICK ON THE ARROW...

DEAR PARENTS/CARERS THIS IS IMPORTANT...ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

Image of empty classroom

It's your responsibility for your child’s attendance

If you are a parent/carer you are legally responsible for making sure your child gets suitable, full-time education. This can be through regular attendance at school or alternative provision.

How we calculate attendance

We count each school day as two sessions, one morning and one afternoon, making a total of 10 sessions over a full school week. Children must attend all 10 sessions each week to achieve 100% attendance.

If a child does not attend school their attendance is reduced by 10% for each session missed. For example, if a child has a half-day absence in a full school week they will have attended nine sessions out of 10. This means they will achieve 90% attendance. If a child is absent for a whole week, their attendance is 0%. Schools will then calculate each child’s attendance over a whole term.

If your child keeps missing school

We expect your child to attend school every day and to be on time, but we understand there may be exceptional reasons for them to miss school.

Children who attend school for less than 90% are considered to be ‘persistently absent’. These children are absent from school half a day each week, on average, and this will have a negative effect on their education and ability to catch up on the work missed.

How to improve your child’s attendance

You can support your child’s regular attendance at school by making sure:

  • medical and dental appointments are outside school hours, such as during school holidays
  • your child is organised for school the night before by having their bag packed, PE kit ready, homework completed and lunch packed
  • your alarm clocks are set in good time.

Children who miss school because of family holidays can miss essential lessons. You must get holiday requests authorised by the Headteacher before you book a holiday, otherwise you risk your child being marked as having an unauthorised absence.

We can prosecute you if:

  • your child attends less than 90% of sessions over a set period of time
  • your child is regularly late for school.

Why attendance matters

We are ambitious for all children and our aim is for them to:

  • enjoy their experience at school
  • succeed
  • have the best possible start to their adult life.

By attending school regularly, children can:

  • reach their full academic potential
  • develop and sustain relationships
  • demonstrate to future employers they are reliable
  • reduce their risk of becoming a victim of crime or abuse
  • reduce their risk of becoming involved in antisocial or criminal behaviour.

The link between irregular school attendance and poor academic achievement and limited life outcomes have been well researched. Please contact your child’s Pastoral Leader or a member of the Attendance and Safeguarding Team if you’d like more support in dealing with your child’s attendance and punctuality.

PARENT ENGage LEWISHAM WORKSHOPS

A group of Deptford Green Parents who attended a Wellbing Workshop

Some of our wonderful parents attended a Wellbeing Workshop with facilitator, Nicky Dixon on 20th January in the library.

Nicky took participants through strategies to improve mental wellbeing and learn coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety.  There will be another workshop coming up in March.  Watch out for information about a second workshop on Resilience and how to book your place in the next newsletter.

Following the wonderful presentation led by Nicky

Sustainable Streets image from Lewisham

The Sustainable Streets for Lewisham project wants to make better use of pavements and road space to improve road safety and air quality, reduce noise and congestion and help more people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

The proposals include:

  • Electric vehicle (EV) charging points
  • More secure cycle storage
  • More trees and planting
  • Safer junctions
  • Changes to parking

Improvements to sustainable travel and charges for parking are proposed to ensure our streets meet the needs of the local community.

Why do we need improvements? By 2041, we want 10 percent of all journeys in Lewisham to be made by walking, cycling or public transport. Action like this will help tackle the climate crisis, reduce congestion, improve air quality and road safety, and make our neighbourhoods greener, healthier and more enjoyable places to live, work, play and do business. The proposed changes will help achieve this.  Click on the link to find out if your street is included in the survey.  Click HERE

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK: 6th - 12th FEBRUARY

BUILDING CONNECTIONS WITH PLACE2BE AND DR ALEX GEORGE

Dr Alex George talking about Connections

This reflective activity, led by UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador Dr Alex George, encourages young people to think of ways to use their voice to connect with those who may feel marginalised or disconnected.

In this activity, young people are taken through a series of questions and asked to consider their thoughts on them.

Building Connections questions

  • Can boys and men be feminists?
  • How can white people show that they are anti-racist?
  • How can straight people be allies to those who identify as LGBTQI+?
  • How can extroverts leave enough room in social spaces for introverts to have their voices heard?
  • How can bystanders intervene safely when they witness bullying behaviour?

We suggest watching the video below, with or without BSL interpretation, and then discussing it with your child/children.  To watch the video, click HERE

Thank you to Alison Kelleher from Place2Be who does such an AMAZING job with our students... take a look at what she has put together for our students this week.  Her artwork is fantastic (she does nearly all of it herself with help from some of our students) but even more important, the messages she is sending to our students and the support for their positive mental health is outstanding.

If you want you could use her questions and prompts to talk to your child about how they are doing in these difficult times...

 Thank you Alison!
