HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

HEADTEACHER: MS THURSTON

Welcome to the first newsletter of the Spring term and the New Year!

The festive break seems like it was a long time ago due to the plethora of activity and opportunity taking place each day here at DG.

The new enrichment timetable has started with a bang with gaming, football, basketball and Debate Mate off to a great start. Student Leadership and Voice has been a focus with School Captains presenting in all year group assemblies as outstanding Eco Warriors! There are GREAT leaders in Year 7 carrying out lunch duties and the first round of school council meetings taking place. Watch this space!

Many trips and visits have already taken place with an inspiring visit to Ravensbourne University for Yr 10 textiles students and our Equality Ambassadors attending the New Cross Fire Memorial with Mr Paish earlier this week. Year 8 Brilliant Club students visited Cambridge University where they were able to immerse themselves in the environment!

I am so proud of the success achieved by some of our Sports Teams. The KS4 boys basketball team are the Lewisham champions - this is such amazing news!  Well done boys. Mr Walker's year 11 Football team progress into the next round of the Blackheath Cup after beating Woolwich Polytechnic on penalties after an exciting 3-3 draw. Goalkeeper Finn picked up the game's Man of the Match award for not conceding a single penalty!

The reading challenge in Year 7 & 8  was hugely popular with lots of winners across the two year groups. It has been really lovely to see so many students avidly reading each day in the library.

I am sure you are all keen to know our plans for the upcoming strike action. The Senior Team are working hard on a clear and strategic plan. This is quite a complicated process and as soon as we have this confirmed I will share this with you so that you have the time to make suitable arrangements.

We are really keen to involve more parents in our Parent Engagement group. Later this term we will send you details on how you can become more involved in supporting the school and hope that many of you will be able to find the time to do so.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Emma Thurston

HOT CHOCOLATE FRIDAY

The following students were recognised as outstanding by their Head of Year and had Hot Chocolate with Ms Thurston on Friday 13th in recognition of that. They are:

Year 7: Jasmine for helping organise the transition assembly and for being a wonderful GREAT leader - Ms Young

Year 8: Sydney for her incredible artwork which she earned 2nd place in school for the portrait competition - Mr Jones

Year 11: Ruby A for always doing the right thing at school - Mr Conway

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

TAKE A LOOK HERE

OUR SCHOOL CAPTAINS ARE AMAZING! #WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

These are an amazing group of young people.  They wear their Captains ties with pride.  Every day they do our school proud, helping with duties on corridors, offering to help teachers in lessons and in the library. Their manners are exemplary and they lead by example.  On Wednesday 18th the majority of them were helping Y10 Parents at the Parents Evening.  They are involved in different areas of school life including Mental Health Ambassadors, Eco Warriors and Restorative Peer Mentors to name but a few!

Some of them have also been Reading Mentors with Y7 & 8's and the majority of them have taken part in the Duke Of Edinburgh Awards.

Last week four of them made an excellent presentation to the Senior Leadership Team. High on their agenda is to take action to develop and improve community work, to become an eco-school and to focus on improving mental health. They then gave presentations in all the year group assemblies across the week. Well done to Anouk, Loki, Maria and Misha!

School Captains... we are making the most of the time we have left with you! (and of course the rest of year 11, you too!)

We are so proud of our Y8 girls football team who beat every school in Lewisham to get to the final last week at the Millwall schools’ tournament.

The ladies lost 1-O in the final to a team they’d already beaten in the first round! Very frustrating for them, but they were outstanding in terms of togetherness, communication, teamwork and leadership.

Well done girls!

CAREERS NEWS

 Y10 TRIP TO RAVENSBOURNE

Report kindly written by Xanthe - excellent work Xanthe!

On a textiles trip to Ravensbourne University we got to experience a great workshop which involved creating textiles using our creativity and fashion designing skills.

The first half of the workshop had the objective to create 5 textile samples relating to nature, contrast or freedom/restriction.  We were encouraged to be abstract and use mixed media to create samples by sewing, twisting manipulating and wrapping the fabrics.  Once we had produced our samples, we had to fashion our pieces to become outfits for models.

We first worked with the natural fabric but later printed photographs of our work to cut up and redesign as fashion. It was an enjoyable workshop that gave us insight into Fashion Design and Textiles work as well as a chance to tour the university.

YEAR 10 C0MMUNITY APPRENTICES

This week our Y10 Community Apprentice Team travelled to AXA in The City where they presented their project to an audience of business volunteers and other students from across Lewisham.

The judges panel highlighted their creativity and passion for the issue they had chosen to focus on. Their deep commitment to mental health was palpable and their business mentors at Glenmont Partners commented that working with the group over the twelve weeks has resulted in interesting conversations about mental health and well-being in the workplace.

We are very proud that Li’Ana in Y10WA was presented with a Jack Petchey achievement award. Well done Li’Ana!  Her team’s words when read out to the audience triggered a ripple of emotional response across the audience and everyone was really touched.

“Li'Ana is committed to making a difference. From the very start, Liana has continued to put forward "great ideas" and she "has worked hard and always attempted to share her ideas, helping others and no matter what, she contributes trying to do or make of the situation whatever she can if she is struggling to understand it". This is a clear example of Li'Ana's determination and "her demonstrating resilience and supporting others". She is passionate about the social issue project and her team. Her peers applaud her for her bravery because "she is really open about her experiences and how her struggles have affected her". Li'Ana shows "bravery and always shares ideas with the rest of the group". She has "taken charge and showed great leadership skills". Li'Ana is thoughtful and her peers describe her as someone who "works hard" and "has never failed to explain things to me if I don't understand it".  In this way, Li'Ana motivates her team and spreads kindness wherever she goes. She uses initiative, thinks ahead and is always helpful. She welcomes new challenges and opportunities outside of her comfort zone. Li'Ana updated her absent teammates and helped them feel organised and ready to pitch in week 6. She planned ahead and suggested sitting in groups to prepare for the pitch. This is a clear example of how integral Li’Ana is to the team and how she shows compassion towards others. “

If you are in YEAR 10 and want to take part in Community Apprentice, develop your key skills and a project to tackle an issue you care about and be paired with business mentors you will visit in The City, do sign up for our taster session on Monday 30th January from 15:05 till 16:10.

See Ms Nembhard in the careers hub or email cnembhard@deptfordgreen.co.uk

BUSINESS

Year 10 Business (& Enterprise!) did REALLY well selling their Candles at the recent Y10 Parents Evening which was really well attended.

They completely SOLD OUT and have made over £100 and their persuasive sales patter went down well with the Parents who bought them!  Obviously they have the gift of the gab and Mr Aniagwu has taught them well...

The Bank of Things is a new service aimed at 11 to 25 year olds living in Lewisham.

Originally the idea of the Young Mayor of Lewisham team, this project has been designed and developed by young people for young people living in Lewisham in response to the clear need for basic necessities.

We want to ensure that every child and young person in the Borough has access to the everyday essentials that they need to participate fully in their lives, to thrive and reach their full potential. We have a standardised menu of necessary items young people have told us are increasingly harder to come by. These include personal care and hygiene products, school equipment and supplies as well as cold weather clothing.

We are working closely with local community groups to ensure we reach every young person in need.

If you would like to know more, find out how to access the service, how to donate or support our work please visit us at Unit 19 Lewisham Shopping Centre on Monday or Wednesday's 4 -7pm or visit:

www.bankofthingslewisham.com

Thanks for this Ms Joauvel...

PARENT/CARER SKILLS AUDIT

A BIG THANK YOU to those parents/carers who have already completed this form but we would like more if possible please...

A Reminder that we are conducting a Skills Audit to find out what skills and professions exist within our school community and what time parents and carers are willing and able to share to support our young people.

There is a wealth and breadth of experience within our community which could be utilised to enhance our students’ experience.

COULD YOU SUPPORT AN ART WORKSHOP OR AFTER-SCHOOL CLUB?

COULD YOU RUN A NETWORKING OR FUNDRAISING EVENT?

COULD YOUR EMPLOYER MATCH FUND?

COULD YOU AND YOUR EMPLOYER HOST OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ON WORK EXPERIENCE?

COULD YOU COME AND TALK ABOUT YOUR CAREER TO OUR STUDENTS?

Sharing our expertise and resources and cooperating for the good of our students will develop positive links and excellence in our enrichment.

Please complete the form on this link

Please note: We are particularly looking for creative people to help us achieve our aims of becoming the best Arts school in the borough, but we are NOT asking for people to teach.  Parents/carers will be able to work with Art teachers who would co-ordinate this with you.

We appreciate your support and are grateful for your time in filling this form out.
