HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

Image of the headteacher Ms Thurston
HEADTEACHER: MS THURSTON

We made it to the end of a very long, very cold and very busy term standing together strong as a school community. The end of term did not slow up in any way shape or form.

With the wonderful Open Mic session last week, followed by the fabulous Monologue Slam, students enjoyed some much deserved rewards this week with a film or Activities Afternoon.

I was so proud to see so many of our students perform in the Christmas Showcase on Tuesday.  We have so many talented students here at DG; we hope to increase the showcasing opportunities next year and look forward to seeing more parents at these events. We had a huge turnout!  Many of you braved the icy pavements and the transport woes to come along and spread some festive cheer. A special thank you to the three parents who helped to run our food/drinks stall; we raised a significant amount that will be put towards the costs of the whole school production of ‘Our House’ in the summer term.

The Year 9 chefs impressed everybody, not only with the incredible taste of the chicken wraps, but with their tenacity, commitment and professionalism. They managed to get out over 200 plates of food - no mean feat at all! I could not have been more proud. The staff panto was a particular treat for the students. The tears of laughter and joy were a delight to witness as Mr Sinclair declared his undying love to Ms Kaseba!

As we look ahead to the Christmas break with some of the coldest temperatures we have seen for many years across the capital, we understand that many of you may have to limit your heating expenses and reduce costs on gifts and festivities this Christmas. There are local charities that can help.  Please see the section immediately below for more information.

The spring term will bring with it many other rich opportunities for our students. We are getting excited about the launch of our ‘Dream’ days, part of our new remit to increase arts opportunities for all of our school community. The staff will be working together to creatively plan for this on January 3rd.

We look forward to welcoming all of our students back on January 4th at 8:40am sharp for a strong start to the Spring term. Their teachers will be ready to welcome them with some exciting and innovative lessons to light the fires of curiosity within them all.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. We were excited to have had the HIGHEST NUMBER EVER of applications for first and second choice places for our school from the primary school families making their choices at our open days at the start of this term.  This makes us a school of choice in Lewisham. Your support has had a huge impact on the increasing popularity of our wonderful school.

Have a fantastic festive break. Rest up, stay warm, keep smiling and spread the joy to one and all...

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

TAKE A LOOK HERE. CLICK ON THE ARROW

YEAR 7 ROUND UP OF THE TERM: HEAD OF YEAR - MS YOUNG

Year 7's have completed a first term of secondary school!

It has been a journey, but we are extremely proud of all the many positives they have achieved. They have established routines, they know their way around the school, and they all seem really settled in; making friends and building rapport with each other as a new year 7 cohort. They have participated in competitions, been on a wonderful trip and have all really demonstrated great independence and resilience coming into a new place.

Please give your child praise for starting so well! As we phase into the new year, we hope the students will continue to soar with success academically and maintain the impressive start they have made to Deptford Green School.

YEAR 8 ROUND UP OF THE TERM: HEAD OF YEAR - MR JONES

Congratulations to Year 8 on what's been a fantastic term and has seen the year group develop as young learners and be great ambassadors of our school. Earlier this term we had amazing feedback from year 6 parents for our brilliant tour guides on Open days and the Open Evening.

It's been a great term for the arts with several pupil performances in Monologue Slams, assemblies and our end of term Showcase, as well as two year 8's finishing in the top 3 for the whole school art award!

Finally, a huge shoutout to our top 3 LORIC winners of the term: Talha, Katia and Ivan B.

I wish our pupils a restful and well deserved break.

All the best...

Mr Jones

YEAR 9 ROUND UP OF THE TERM: HEAD OF YEAR - MR ANIAGWU

It has been quite an eventful term for year 9's. Some members of the year group are part of the cooking club that prepared a meal for the Cultural Evening and school's Christmas dinner. The girls football team continues to show improvements and great team spirit on the pitch. 9GA represented the year group magnificently in their careers trip to EY. Some of the students who have

maintained exceptional behaviour are named as the Loric Winners below.

In the coming term year 9's will start preparing for their graduation from KS3 by completing a set of LORIC - based tasks. It is expected that they will meet the set tasks and successfully graduate to KS4.

I wish you all a fantastic and happy holiday - Mr Aniagwu

YEAR 10 ROUND UP OF THE TERM: HEAD OF YEAR - MS WILLIAMS

Year 10 have made a positive start to KS4. Students are opening to new challenges and experiences including careers trips in Business and Psychology, and The Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ challenge. The race for Young Mayor of Lewisham has begun; Y10's are dominating the race with 6 applicants! We are so excited to support them as they start their campaigns.

A special mention to Maymuna for sharing such a personal experience in her speak out challenge speech. Thank you Maymuna for being so brave!

Well done to the students below who make up the top 10 in the LORIC league.

Have a wonderful holiday everyone! Ms Williams

YEAR 11 ROUND UP OF THE TERM: HEAD OF YEAR - MR CONWAY

Year 11’s have worked incredibly hard this half term by completing their first round of PPE’s (Pre-Public Examinations). The invigilators and staff who were present in the exam’s hall all commented on how hard-working and respectful the students were. The students then all celebrated receiving their mock results by having a breakfast provided by the school on Friday the 2nd of December.

The year 11 LORIC points are always high, and our reflection points remain one of the lowest in the school. I would like to shout out the top 10 LORIC points earners as we end this first term.. you make me proud to be your HOY.

Have a great Christmas break!  Mr Conway

YEAR 9 AMAZING STUDENT FILM WORK IN ENGLISH:

Students worked in groups to film their own mini films and then wrote screenplays. They have made some incredible film posters and produced some excellent footage! Thanks to Mr Watts for the brilliant lessons. A real film masterclass! (Ms Player)

FILM CLUB:

Mr Watts also continued this excellence in his after-school film club! Well done Mr Watts!

MONOLOGUE SLAM! MR RAMSAY

The first monologue slam at Deptford Green School. Performances included poetry, lyrics, contemporary dance with a hip-hop twist, spoken words, and a philosophical debate.

Our performers were;

Julian and J’dore, Ashey, Loredana, Umu, Jamal, Hephzibah, Orson, Anna, Joshua, Nashawn and Koura .

All of them were amazing, energetic, and direct.  Our presenters were:

Ayuub, Maya and Diora  who were slick with their improvisation and timings.

Deptford Green has definitely got talent! Well done to all...

YEAR 9 & 10 JACK PETCHEY SPEAK OUT CHALLENGE

A selection of our Y9's &10's were chosen to take part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn key skills when addressing an audience and to strengthen their confidence and their public speaking skills.  At eh beginning of the workshop, it was hard for some of them to even think of standing up and speaking in front of their peers but by the end of the day, they produced some EXCELLENT and well thought out speeches.  About 4 or 5 of them will be put forward to take part in the main competition if they choose to go forward.  Read more about the organisation and event HERE

Watch example Speeches - HERE & HERE

YEAR 7 & 8 READING CHALLENGE IS GOING STRONG!

We have extended the reading challenge until after Christmas so that gives our students taking part a continued challenge to keep reading through the holidays.  Students who read over the break should come to the library on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th, take their AR quizzes on the books they have read and hand their challenge cards to Ms Walker BY FRIDAY 6TH JANUARY.  Winners will be announced in the y7 & 8 assemblies the following week.  We are excited to see how much reading has been done!  There's a real buzz about it. Watch this space!

A shining example is Zac in year 7 who is making us so proud!  Take a look at how well he is doing!  He is really getting into the challenge in a big way!  He comes into the library and loves to read, is always kind and polite! Well done Zac!

PARENTS/STUDENTS PLEASE return your outstanding library books to Ms Walker.  We have limited copies of books and if you are holding on to them, other students can't borrow them.  Thank you!

YOUNG MAYOR REPORTS BY J'ADORE & ARTURS Y10

Civic Suite Catford - Friday 18th November 2022

J'Adore 10GI & Julia 10GI:

Several proactive year 10 students from our school made their way to the Civic Suite in Catford.  We took part in multiple activities that included addressing stereotypes and racism in schools and other issues centred around young people in Lewisham.

We socialized with many other schools and Young Mayoral candidates, gaining their views and opinions on social issues in Lewisham. We played games and put together power points to show how diverse our schools are when it comes to culture.

By taking part in this process, we gained knowledge on our national parliament, the local council, some even signed up to becoming young mayoral candidates. The Young Mayor's Team offered us the chance to display what action our school has already taken to combat racism and other key issues.  Thank you

J'Adore & Julia

ARTURS 10CR:

We went on Saturday and Sunday to Lewisham Local to have our training so we can further our candidacy for the Young Mayor of Lewisham. I went there and was greeted by Katie and other staff that work there. I received a folder with all the information I needed for the process and signed my official application.

After that, I got to meet other pupils from Lewisham schools.  There were some great young people there. Then the formal part of the day started and we said our names and why we wanted to be the Young Mayor of Lewisham.  We then had another activity where we had to meet a person we had never spoken to before and had to talk to them and find out 2 things about them and why they also had applied for the position. Because of this activity, we got to know more people and made more friends. After we finished with that activity, we went to the Lewisham Theatre where we did our photos and got ready for our videos. A professional person recorded us and will edit the videos. Some people did it, but then sadly there was a fire alarm and everyone had to go out so they had to send us home but we had to come back the next day to complete our videos.

I came back the next day and got greeted by Katie again. I did my video, even though I was very nervous throughout the process because I kept on forgetting about my lines that I had practised only 5 minutes before! It felt pretty good though after I finished the video and then I felt more prepared for the next stage of this process.

Thank you Arturs and well done to both J'adore, Julia and Arturs for writing about their experience and we wish all our DG candidates the best of luck as they go forward in this process.  Do DG proud all of you!  Our candidates are: Isabelle, Felix, Michael, Arturs, Ella, Lucia, Hibaaq, Julia and J'Adore (not pictured)

STAFF PANTO: MARIA FAIRY COMES TO DEPTFORD GREEN! OOH ER!

A small and dedicated group of staff rehearsed for several weeks led by our director Jamie Heelbeck to create the magic of Christmas, oh yes we did!!! But this was no usual Cinderella, downtrodden and needing a man to help her out of the mire. This was a Cinderella who took her life by the collar and shook things up and when Prince Charming turned out not to live up to his name she declared, ’I don’t need no man’ and she embraced her new world order fearlessly.

Mariah Fairy, the godmother on roller skates, did her best to make Cindy’s life better, but Cindy had all the power she needed within herself to make the good times roll. Ugly sisters kicked to the kerb, holding down a job and managing the household, like generations of women before her, strong, empowered and fabulous!!

The Year 7 and 8's enjoyed the show and made all the right noises. Booing the baddies and cheering the goodies along the way. They loved the novelty of their teachers taking a risk and putting on some greasepaint, wigs and the occasional frock to entertain and have a shared laugh. The Year 11's were a more sedate crowd, but enjoyed the show nonetheless. The Christmas spirit soared, loud and clear and true. A new tradition for The Green, an annual panto to usher in the yuletide.

Felicitations to all.

Thank you Mr Paish!

OPEN MIC WITH MR HILL OUR NEW HEAD OF MUSIC & SOME PRETTY AMAZING STUDENTS!

It was the first real Open Mic performance that was open to people not involved with the club. The turnout was great with an audience of around 20 in the music room. Its main purpose was to offer the pupils performing in the Christmas showcase a chance to try out their performances in front of a real audience before the night itself, but we had more than just those involved in the show.

Genres ranged from heavy rock to modern pop ballads, with lots in between.

The performers involved were:

Jos 7, Alfie , Jordan  (filled in last minute on the drums), Solomon, Kari, Kehinde, Stevie, Ky-Mani, Inalen, Lola and Kate

Thank you to all of you.  You were brilliant! Mr Hill

Thank you Mr Hill!

EXCITING THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN THE NEW TERM...

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR THE SPRING TERM

We have plenty of activities ahead of us.  As always Ms Nembhard has got a packed schedule of activities centred around Careers and developing ideas for your future journey beyond Deptford Green so try to get involved as there is truly a rich programme of Careers Events for you to engage with in the New Year.

Ms Nembhard has highlighted this exciting programme which 20 - 25  Y10's can take part in.

This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to respond creatively to a poignant and hopeful story through art, poetry, song lyrics and discussion and would be a great particularly for students with an interest in Creative writing, Art, Photography, Music or Drama.  This project will take place in the new term and culminates with a visit on the 28 March 2023 to a workshop at the Migration Museum in Lewisham. The workshop will include interactive sessions with the author Sita Brahmachari, Natalie Sirett, the illustrator and musician Love Ssega.

If you are in Year 10 and you are interested or want to know more, please see Ms Nembhard or Ms Walker when we get back.  Y10 tutors will also be informed so they can remind you with more detail.

ONLINE BOOK CLUB FOR Y9 -11: SKIN OF THE SEA BY NATASHA BOWEN

There will be another National Online Teen Bookclub starting on the 18th January through Speakers for Schools. This takes place every Wednesday from 3.30 - 4.30pm in the library for Y9 - Y11's.  The next book is a fantasy novel and I hope you agree that its cover is beautiful!

This is an epic love story infused with West African mythology.

For fans of The Gilded Ones, Children of Blood and Bone, and Circe, this book is a powerful new imagining of a devastating time in history, told through the eyes of a bold and unforgettable heroine. This is the story of a great love - a love that will threaten worlds and anger Gods. This is a story that will change history... come join us and (virtually) meet industry professionals and in the last of the 4 week programme, meet the author, Natasha Bowen.

You can discuss the book with your peers in a friendly and safe environment and when listening to the visiting speakers, put questions to them about their career journeys.  This is an EXCELLENT programme to add to your CV's for when you apply to Sixth Forms & colleges and it opens up a window on the world of work and future career ideas.

If you are interested, see Ms Nembhard or Ms Walker.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & CARERS

TAKE A LOOK HERE. CLICK ON THE ARROW...

PARENT/CARER SKILLS AUDIT

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are conducting a Skills Audit to find out what skills and professions exist within our school community and what time, if any, parents and carers are willing and able to share to support our young people.

There is a wealth and breadth of experience in our community which could be utilised to enhance our students’ experience.

  • Could you support an Art workshop or after-school Club?
  • Could you network and fundraise or run and event around this?
  • Could your employer match fund?
  • Could you and your employer host young people on work experience?
  • Could you come and talk about your career?

Sharing our expertise and resources and cooperating for the good of our students will develop positive links and excellence in our enrichment.

Please complete the form on this link: https://forms.office.com/e/qrfZWE6UCN

Please note: We are particularly looking for creative people to help us achieve our aims of becoming the best Arts school in the borough, but we are NOT asking for people to teach.  Parents/carers will be able to work with Art teachers who would co-ordinate this with you.

We appreciate your support and are grateful for your time. Thank you

Please could you try and label your child's/children's uniform and coats etc.  We have items of clothing handed in that we cannot match with students because they are not labelled.  We know uniform and clothing costs you money so help us help you not to pay out a second time (or more times with some of our more forgetful students!)  Thank you...

COMING IN JANUARY - A WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS/CARERS RUN BY PARENT ENGAGE LEWISHAM

Would you like to participate in a Wellbeing & Resilience workshop? We would like up to 15 parents to join. It will be held at Deptford Green on Friday 20th January. Parent Engage will provide a breakfast of pastries, fruit, sachets for hot and cold drinks and the workshops can start between 9:15 - 9:30am, and last for up to 2 hours.

Interested?  Watch this space in the next edition of the newsletter and I will be emailing out nearer the event with sign up information!   Or contact me: Library@deptfordgreen.co.uk

DO YOU HAVE ANY UNWANTED CHILDREN'S AND YOUNG ADULT BOOKS JUST SITTING AT HOME GATHERING DUST? WILLING TO DONATE?

If you have any of your children's books just sitting around at home and they're not wanted anymore and they're in good condition and appropriate for our age students, they would be very gratefully received!  email: library@deptfordgreen.co.uk

Advice for supporting your child’s mental health

HEADS TOGETHER Image of the logo of Heads Together Charity

"Through our work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities, and with veterans, we have seen time and time again that unresolved mental health problems lie at the heart of some of our greatest social challenges." - The Prince of Wales

Too often, people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health. This fear of prejudice and judgement stops people from getting help and can destroy families and end lives. Heads Together wants to help people feel much more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and have the practical tools to support their friends and family.

Heads Together is a mental health initiative spearheaded by The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales, which combines a campaign to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health with fundraising for a series of innovative new mental health services. For more information CLICK HERE
