HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we head into the final four weeks of the summer term, the school has been buzzing with energy, achievement and inspiration. It’s been a time to celebrate our students, launch meaningful initiatives, and build momentum for the future.

One of the standout moments this term has been our AMAZING Dream Days —two action-packed days of trips, creative workshops, and inspirational visits for our KS3 students. These events were all about expanding horizons and encouraging our young people to dream big about their future in the creative industries. From exploring museums and galleries to participating in hands-on sessions with professionals, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students returned with smiles on their faces and new ambitions in their hearts. A huge “Thank You” goes to Mr Paish and Ms Nembhard for their hard work and dedication in organising such enriching experiences.

Another significant milestone was the launch of Project Elevate, our three-year action research initiative aimed at raising the aspirations and outcomes of our Black Caribbean students. Data continues to show that this group underperforms across national measures, and this project represents our deep commitment to equity, excellence, and empowerment. The launch event, led by Mr Josephs and Ms Ahmed, was a truly special evening. Families gathered to share home-cooked food, connect with mentors, and engage in heartfelt conversations about the support and opportunities ahead. It was a powerful beginning to a project that we know will have a lasting impact.

Meanwhile, our Y11 students marked the end of their journey with a magical prom evening. Set on a boat gently cruising down the river under a sunny sky, the evening was filled with elegant dresses, sharp suits, joyful dancing, and laughter— a beautiful celebration of their hard work and growth. A well-deserved moment of joy and reflection before they move on to their next chapter.

Our Y10's have also been showing great resilience and maturity in their recent Pre-Public Exams (PPE's). Their focus and dedication to revision and assessment has not gone unnoticed and we’re proud of how they’ve risen to the challenge.

Looking ahead, next week brings a stretch of hot weather. Please encourage students to bring plenty of water, wear appropriate clothing, and continue to show resilience in every lesson. With just four weeks left of term, attendance and punctuality are more important than ever. Every day counts, and we want to make the most of every learning opportunity.

Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the sunshine and let’s keep the momentum going right up to the end!

Emma Thurston

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

On Thursday 26th June our wonderful Y11 students and our staff attended the prom, gathering on the Greenwich Pier and looking like they were attending the red carpet at the Oscars! This was truly a glamorous Prom as I think you will agree when you see the amazing photos Ms Thurston took.  Obviously these are not all of them, but here are a selection.

Y11 we will miss you - are already - but we will see you in August and hopefully in the Autumn Term for a Celebration of Achievement event.  Enjoy these images!

Thanks again Ms Thurston for the lovely photos and to other staff who also contributed.  Mr Conway and Ms Samms were very impressed with their year group who not only looked beautiful but behaved beautifully also!  #so proud!

DREAM DAYS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS!

Through the opportunities our KS3 students were exposed to during the two Dream Days last week, we feel we ensured our students can Dream Big and embrace the world of Art and Culture around them. Even if they don’t realise it right away, we have helped to build their cultural capital forever.

A special thank you to the brilliant Ms Nembhard and the Arts team for providing such rich opportunities and for Mr Paish for his key part in making this such a huge success too - and for being on the trips with our students and keeping them upbeat on both days!

Well done to our amazing staff and students for engaging in the activities and help making it all work! #DG what a Team!

LAUNCH OF PROJECT ELEVATE

On Wednesday 25th June from 4-5pm, Mr Josephs and Ms Ahmed launched this wonderful new project in the Mark Phillips Library.  This is a mentoring project aimed at Black Students (mostly from a Caribbean background) with training, support, coaching and advice at its heart in order to raise academic achievement and strengthen confidence in our young people from this group.  We look forward to seeing updates along the way!

WORK EXPERIENCE WAS TRULY WONDERFUL!

One week. Dozens of employers. Endless learning.

Our Y10 students completed their work experience week — and what a week it was!

From first-day nerves to final-day confidence, we were proud to see students grow in resilience, professionalism, and curiosity.

Students were helping in gyms and supporting reading in primary classrooms, pitching marketing ideas in advertising agencies and leading workshops in museums, baking bread, testing new cake recipes and prepping for the lunch service in a busy restaurant, servicing bikes, booking appointments, curating exhibitions, editing video reels, working in the dark room developing pictures, preparing legal bundles and acquisition reports and even sitting in on meetings.

Every single experience has added a piece to their picture of the working world.

Read some of the students’ feedback and see them at work here...

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR PLACEMENT?

“Doing my work experience at the museum taught me that I do want to work with children and enjoy supporting their learning. I loved moving to different sites for activities and being independent in how I carried out activities. I enjoyed communicating with adults and having my views and ideas valued.”

“Loved everything …developing images, screen printing and being in the studio.”

“WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS GOING ON THEIR WORK EXPERIENCE NEXT YEAR?

"Would advise students to do their research before they go and be clear about where they need to be and by when and how to get there.”

To our incredible employers: THANK YOU.
To the amazing parents and carers doing the morning drop-offs and keeping students going with packed lunches, home-cooked evening dinners and words of encouragement when tiredness crept in: THANK YOU!
To our GREAT students who said “yes” to something new (even if it meant wearing a name badge all week): THANK YOU.

We have loved hearing your stories — and we are excited to see how these experiences shape your next steps.

Thanks for all this Ms Nembhard and all that you did for our students, staff and parents throughout the whole programme.

ENRICHMENT IN GEOGRAPHY

Y10 FIELDWORK TRIP TO STRATFORD

As part of their GCSE, our Y10 Geographers visited Stratford to collect data to see whether the regeneration of Stratford has been successful post Olympics. Our students completed various tasks, including interviewing members of the public to see if housing, transport and services had improved. Well done y10 - You were truly GREAT!

Y7 EXCELLENT WORK

Our Y7's have been looking at life in the Middle East and what the future could hold for Saudi Arabia, a country currently embarking on large-scale mega projects such as The Line. Our students have been creating posters and signs that are exploring the opportunities and challenges of such ambitious projects. Well done to Tom, Jason, Kester and Elspeth (featured below) and all the Y7's for the wonderful work produced.

TEACHER PROFILE

Hi! I'm Ms Wild. I am the Head of Year for Y9's. At university I studied Human Geography in Sheffield. I've always been fascinated by how people shape the world around them, and one of my favourite topics to explore is urbanisation—especially how cities grow and change over time depending on people's needs and behaviours.

This year has been such a fun and rewarding one. I've absolutely loved teaching all my classes and sharing my passion for geography with so many curious and enthusiastic students. It's been brilliant to see how engaged everyone has been.

I'm really looking forward to the summer holidays, as I’ll be heading to Thailand to travel around and experience the culture first-hand. I can’t wait to explore the landscapes, try the food, and learn more about life in a completely different part of the world!

Ms Wild's Home Learning Advice

Y7-Y9: If you would like additional support with Home Learning please see Mr Dallimore in room 211 and lunch or after school. At KS3 homework is always in a booklet and set once every two weeks. To complete all homework should take 60 minutes.

Y10:  Don't rush your homework, space it out over the week. Completing small chunks every day is better than completing your homework the night before it is due. Homework is set every week and should take 60 minutes to complete properly. Have you started your Netflix challenge?

WOW! WEEK IN GEOGRAPHY

In our Week of Wonder (WOW Week) our learners engaged in a variety of activities including Migration LUDO which saw students compete against each other to race around the world whilst encountering various obstacles that taught them about the challenges that refugees face when fleeing war and persecution.

STUDENT COUNCIL & ECO AMBASSADORS ATTEND LEWISHAM YOUTH SUMMIT

Members of the Student Council and our Eco Ambassadors, recently attended an inspiring Youth Summit organised by the Lewisham Young Mayor. The day was packed with fun activities, creative challenges, and thought-provoking workshops designed to empower young people and encourage active participation in their communities.

Our students had the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting workshops, including:

  • Spoken Word
  • Climate Change Activism
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Designing a New Uniform for Lewisham Youth Workers
  • Human Rights

Throughout the day, students demonstrated and developed their LORIC  behaviours in meaningful and practical ways.

A real highlight was seeing some of our students perform their spoken-word pieces in front of students from other schools – a brilliant show of confidence, creativity, and self-expression.

I hope the event has empowered our students to recognise the value of their voices and the role they play in shaping positive change in their schools, communities, and beyond.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES: EVIL & SUFFERING

Harley with Ms Joauvel

This term, Y9 students have been exploring the topic of Evil and Suffering in Religious Studies. As part of their learning, they’ve looked at different philosophical and religious explanations, including the ideas of free will and soul making — the belief that suffering can play a role in developing character and spiritual growth.

To bring these ideas to life, students were invited to express their understanding through a creative canvas painting. Each student chose to represent either suffering, free will, or soul making in a way that was personal and meaningful to them.

I have been incredibly impressed by the depth of thought and creativity shown in the artwork, i hope you enjoy seeing how students have interpreted these complex and powerful ideas.

Harley says:

'My artwork was based on the idea of free will and how your own actions sit atop the guidelines God has set for you. I represented this through Proverbs 4:23 ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.’ which conveys a need for self-protection from evil ideologies and actions'.

Thanks Ms Joauvel for all these wonderful contributions...
