HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

Dear Parents and Carers,

In a world where so much feels uncertain—whether it’s global unrest, climate challenges or the fast pace of change—it’s more important than ever to stay connected, creative and kind. Here in school, we’ve seen brilliant examples of that in action, and this newsletter gives just a glimpse of the energy and positivity happening across our community.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Take a look back at your Y10 Photography trip, Y7 Graduation, Y11’s heartfelt leaving events, and some fantastic student-led fundraising from our House Captains. We’ve also had a packed calendar of Careers activities—including a visit to Oxford—plus updates from our Business, Computing and PE departments.

WHAT'S COMING UP

We’re gearing up for some exciting events to round off the year, including the amazing Y11 Prom. Watch this space for the lovely photos of them in their glad rags!

Creative Gatherings (Y11 GCSE Art show)  & the whole school musical Fame, will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase and celebrate the amazing talents of our Arts students. Next week we have Dream Days, two full days of trips, visits and activities to broaden horizons and embed links to the world of Creative work for KS3 students. Our Y9's are currently gearing up for their upcoming  Graduation and I hope to see many of you at this term's Crafternoon Tea, and the parent-led Musical Bingo. There's something for everyone, and we can't wait to celebrate with you!

We still have 5 weeks of learning to go and we need our young people in school on time every day. Thank you in advance for your support with this. As we know, attendance each day has a significant impact on outcomes, therefore, in line with our policy, holiday requests in curriculum time shall not be authorised unless there are exceptional circumstances.

As the heat continues, please remember to remind your young person to bring a refillable water bottle to stay cool, and best of luck to all our Y10's sitting exams next week—you’ve got this!

Warmest wishes,

Emma Thurston

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

SAYING GOODBYE TO OUR WONDERFUL Y11'S

 YOU WILL BE MISSED!

On Wednesday 11th June, following on from their Leaver's Assembly led by their Head of Year, Mr Conway with Mr Callaghan, Mr Allen and Ms Samms, the students all took their creatively designed leavers' shirts out for the traditional signing! Well done Y11 - you will be missed but we will see you prom, at results day in August and for your Celebration Of Achievement event.  Details will follow.

To all our wonderful Y11students, parents and carers; if you have any old uniform that is still in good condition that we can use to either sell to raise funds or simply pass on, and if you have any revision guides you no longer need, please do bring them into reception and we will make sure they are recycled in some way. Thank you.

Y7 GRADUATION EVENT

On Wednesday 11th June, Ms Ahmed, Mr Josephs and Mr Sinclair very proudly led the Y7 year group in their graduation.  Mr Sinclair, looking very debonair in a crushed velvet jacket, has much to be proud of with this wonderful year group.  Here are a few of the images from the event.

Ms Ahmed, Mr Josephs & Mr Sinclair

Samuel in Y8 and Daniel in Y7 provided a musical interlude

Well done to everyone who helped make this event run smoothly and congratulations to all our wonderful students who graduated! And to Mr Sinclair of course for being a dapper Head of Year!

On Tuesday 3rd June, The Mr Heelbeck and I went with an amazing group of students to watch this show at the Phoenix Theatre.  It was an INCREDIBLE show but definitely not for the faint-hearted! The special effects were phenomenal and I think (mostly) everyone had a fantastic experience (if not a bit scared!) I would definitely recommend it if you are a Stranger Things fan!

DG students are amazing! Just a brilliant night out! #so proud

INTRODUCING MS TUMKEVICE

Hi everyone,

My name is Ms Tumkevice and I’ve been teaching since 2018 working in inner-city London schools. My journey began as a Teacher of Business and I quickly moved up through middle leadership roles like Head of Vocational Courses and overseeing Business & Economics courses. Since January 2024, I’ve been proud to lead the Business and Computing department here at Deptford Green School.

I actually stepped away from teaching for a year - it’s a tough job! But that time away made me realise just how much I missed working with young people and being part of their journey. So, here I am, back in the classroom doing what I love the most.

I’m a bit of an education geek – I love reading books about cognitive science, and the fascinating ways our brains absorb and retain information.

Outside of school, you will find me exploring new corners of the world, skiing in winter, and surfing in summer.

Last year, our Y11 Business results took a big leap, and I’m feeling even more optimistic about this year’s group. August can’t come soon enough!

COMPUTING STUDENT UPDATES

Huge congratulations to all Y11 students who have just completed their GCSE Computer Science exams! Sitting both Paper 1 (Computer systems) and Paper 2 (Computational Thinking & Programming) is a significant undertaking and you should all be proud of your hard work and dedication. Your efforts will pay off. Now, take a well-deserved break—you’ve earned it!

ATTENTION Y10 - YOUR PPE'S ARE COMING UP FAST!

For our Y10 Computer Science students, your mock exams are just around the corner! (27June). This is a fantastic opportunity to:

  • Test your understanding of key topics.
  • Identify areas for improvement before the real GCSEs.
  • Build confidence in exam conditions.

Make use of the resources on Teams and use the following simple techniques to help you prepare:

1. ACTIVE RECALL WITH FLASHCARDS

Create and use flashcards (paper or digital tools like Quizlet) to quiz yourself on key terms, algorithms, and definitions.

2. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Redo the questions we do on Thursdays in your own time, and use platforms like Craig’n’Dave or Isaac Computer Science for interactive revision.

3. TEACH IT TO SOMEONE ELSE

One of the best ways to solidify your understanding is to explain a concept to a friend. Try it to reveal to yourself what you truly know or need to revisit.

COMPUTING RISING STARS

Y7: SCRATCH SUPERSTARS!

A special mention to Jesse, Grace, Rae and Tom for their outstanding work in Scratch programming!

Y8: FLOWCHART CHAMPIONS!

Well done to Treasure, Ava, and Diamond for embracing flowcharts with enthusiasm!

Y9: PYTHON PIONEERS!

To all our Y9 students who are now writing their first programs in Python —you’re taking a huge step forward in programming. Keep experimenting, debugging, and pushing your limits!

Remember: Computer Science is all about curiosity, persistence, and creativity. Keep pushing yourselves DG!

Thanks to Ms Tumkevice and Mr Djizo

Y10 VISIT TO OXFORD

Our Y10 students had an inspiring day visiting Oxford University, exploring both our partner College, St Catz, and Jesus College.

From chatting with undergraduates to imagining life at one of the world’s top universities, it was all about aiming high and discovering new possibilities.

We also took part in Maths and Medicine tasters and a puzzling and thought-provoking language taster session that got everyone thinking about our use of metaphors.

Fun fact of the day: Oxford students wear special gowns and carnations during exams – white for the first exam, pink for the others, and red for the final one!

Walking through Oxford we saw many students wearing red carnations and celebrating the end of their exams and even when we got absolutely drenched by a sudden downpour, there was a joyous atmosphere.

Our students left feeling motivated, curious, and ready to explore, dream and discover.

CONNECTION WITH MY TEENAGER

Understand what's going on for them, how to strengthen your connection and communicate better.

WHY IT MATTERS

Parenting a teenager can feel a lot like parenting a toddler in some ways. The teenage years are another time of rapid growth and development. This developmental stage is also all about moving towards more independence.

The teenager still needs a connection with their parent or carer. Children need to feel they have a secure base to return to as they transition into the exciting but scary world outside the family.
