HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

Dear Families,

Emma Thurston: Headteacher

I do hope your child has had a smooth and successful start to the new school year and welcome to the first newsletter of it! You should expect a newsletter every 2 weeks. I know that my staff have been incredibly pleased with the start to the term for the vast majority of our young people. Y7 especially, have impressed us with their polite manner and attitude to learning. Y11’s have returned to school super focused and committed to their studies, already preparing for the upcoming PPE’s next half-term.

Heads of Year will be sending you a letter this week outlining key dates and important information relevant to your child. You will find details of many upcoming opportunities for this school year below. Assemblies last week were led by Ms Daswani on 'World Afro Day', and this week our MFL team are delivering assemblies on European Languages. There was a Geography field trip to Eastbourne with Mr Stamp and a textiles trip for Y10 & Y11 with Ms Greenhalgh, so our term is off to a busy start!

Y9’s Discovery Day was launched last week, incredibly successfully I might add! It was an absolute delight to see so many students deeply engaged in the Arts. Photos of this will follow soon.

As we open our doors to hundreds of prospective Y6 families this week and next as part of our Open Season, I continue to be incredibly proud of our school community, which is testament to the support we receive from you, our parents and carers, so thank you!

In closing, a reminder that school closes early on Thursday (19th September) in order to support preparation for our Open Evening. Please carefully check the email sent out to you which outlines the plans.

Have a wonderful week...

Emma Thurston

ANOTHER EXCITING TRIP COMING UP IN MARCH!

Dear Parent/Carer,

French Immersion School Trip to La Grande Ferme Residential Centre in Normandy, France

The Languages Department is delighted to be able to offer students the opportunity to take part in a residential trip to La Grande Ferme, a residential school centre in Normandy, France on 13/03/2025-17/03/2025 (4 nights). This trip is open to all Y8/9/10 pupils currently studying French and who are also interested in History, Art or Textiles.

The trip will provide an exclusive opportunity for students to discover how their studies can be used in real life contexts and to appreciate the differences in foreign culture first-hand. The trip will be led by a native French animateur, who will get students speaking French at every opportunity in a fun, supportive and interactive way. The programme is built around day trips and excursions to local attractions in Normandy including:

  • The Christian Dior museum
  • The beautiful fort town of Mont Saint-Michel
  • The historic town of Bayeux
  • A guided tour of the Bayeux Tapestry
  • Go-Ape high-ropes climbing
  • French bakery
  • A French market experience to practise French
  • Historic WWII cemetery visit
  • On-site activities at the centre including: climbing, swimming and pool games, archery, volleyball, pétanque, football, aeroball, circus skills and snail tasting!

The programme encourages students to listen and practise their French from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave in a supportive environment that helps students become more confident, and most importantly, have fun!

We will be staying at La Grande Ferme in Normandy, 120 minutes south of Cherbourg. Students stay in gender-specific en-suite bunk rooms in gîte accommodation blocks situated in the centre’s 3 acres of private grounds.

La Grande Ferme is a long-established French language centre and has been welcoming UK school groups for over 25 years. The French language school centre has a dedicated team of operational staff and French-native animateurs, all of which are carefully vetted and qualified to instruct activities professionally and safely.

The cost of the trip will be £529 or £329 if your child is Pupil Premium (based on a maximum group of 40 students). This price includes: all 3 meals a day once we have arrived at the centre, accommodation, all trips and activities cost and travel insurance. The price does not include personal expenditure, food and drink while travelling (coach/ferry) and drinks (except water) with meals.

If you wish your child to join that fantastic trip, lease pay a deposit of £200 on ParentPay by 07/10/2024.

Please be aware that by paying the deposit for the trip, you are entering into an agreement to pay the full amount of the trip cost. Once the school has submitted the deposit to the travel company, refunds will only be possible if we are able to find a suitable replacement for your child’s spot. While we will make every effort to assist in finding a replacement, this is not guaranteed, and until one is secured, the full payment will still be required. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

The payment plan will be as follows:

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

Y11 GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO EASTBOURNE

This week Y11 visited Eastbourne to explore how physical landscapes change. Not only was their behaviour exceptional but so was their geographical knowledge! I am one very proud teacher.

Thank you Mr Stamp.  Diolch yn Fawr!

Milo said:

'Very interesting day today at Eastbourne as we explored longshore and how it works. We also explored how sediment builds up around groynes and the different rock sizes further and closer to the sea. I had a great time dreaming, discovering and exploring the pier and local area. Eastbourne is known for its beautiful pier and amazing people.' (Milo, Y11)

Thank you Milo!

Deborah said:

'We went to Eastbourne to collect primary data for our hypothesis. Our hypothesis is that " deposition, transportation, and erosion all occur at the same rate along the whole coast.

Firstly, we measured the average amount of time taken for an orange to reach the tape measure to calculate the longshore drift and the direction of the prevailing winds. Secondly we recorded the number of waves to reach the shore in one-minute intervals to understand if the waves were constructive or destructive. Lastly we carried out measurements of the length on either side of 2 groynes that were 500 ft apart from each other to see which direction longshore drift was moving material. Overall, we had a great day on the pier, taking pictures and buying souvenirs!'

Thank you Deborah...

Y10 & Y11 TEXTILES TRIP: THREADS OF NATURE

Last Thursday a group of y10 and 11 textile students visited the private view 'Threads of Nature', an exciting and immersive exhibition featuring vibrant artworks by creative Alice Burnhope and talented local co-creators from community gardens across Lewisham. The exhibition brought together a collection which explored the healing benefits of gardens through stunning drawings, textiles, prints, and installations. The space was infused with a fresh lemon scent and live flowers and mosses complimented the artworks. There was a wealth of inspiration for our young textile artists, with sketchbooks displayed as well as outcomes to engage the students in furthering their practice.

Thank you Ms Greenhalgh

CELEBRATING WORLD AFRO DAY

Ms Austin-Burdett and Ms Daswani oversaw this amazing photographic celebration. Here are just a small selection with more to follow. A huge thank you to all who took part... you all look amazing!

YOUTH EXPLAINERS PROGRAMME AT KEW GARDENS

This is an amazing scheme for students aged 14 +! Applications are now opened for the Youth Explainers Programme at Kew Gardens and the team there would love to receive applications from Deptford Green students interested in Science, Geography and the environment.

This is a free, year-long training and volunteering placement based at Kew Gardens and themed around science communication.

During the first six months, participants will develop their understanding of Kew science and conservation, and gain skills in public engagement before designing their own tabletop games based on plants in Kew's glasshouse collections.

In the second six months of the placement, participants will volunteer in one of Kew's world-renowned glasshouses, playing their games with members of the public to educate them on the conservation status, threats and uses of plants found at Kew.

The programme is also an opportunity for participants to complete their Bronze or Silver skill and voluntary sections of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards as well as obtaining a Kew Young Environmental Leaders Award.

If you have any questions, or want support with applications, do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly. Ms Nembhard.
