SADLY WE SAY GOODBYE...

A number of staff are leaving us as we close this academic year.

Our wonderful Deputy Designated Safeguarding & Attendance Officer Lynn Ascott, who has been with us for over 24 years and who has diligently served the whole school community, is retiring and is cruising off into the sun (our Lynn loves a cruise)! Thank you Ms Ascott for all you have done for Deptford Green.  You have worked tirelessly for so many of our pupils, their families and staff and have supported them through a lot of difficulties and hardships along the way, but you have always done so with so much kindness and empathy!  We appreciate you and you will be greatly missed...

Ms Ascott

We also say goodbye to the following staff who we thank for all their hard work and dedication to our school community. We wish them much happiness as they go to other schools or in some cases, other careers altogether or indeed other countries! Bon voyage and you will not be forgotten. Don't forget us and please come back and visit...

Ms Young, Ms Barradell, Mr Ibachirene-Firth, Ms Gilchrist, Mr George and Mr Hill

MARK PHILLIPS HEADTEACHER OF DEPTFORD GREEN BETWEEN 2016-2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our former Headteacher, Mark Phillips, who has passed after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. In the words of a former colleague, "Mark gave his life to education and was a leader of great integrity for decades, influencing thousands of lives across the country, and in Lewisham. More than this, he was an exceptional human being".  Rest In Peace.

If you would like to send a message of condolence to Mark's family, please click HERE

TODAY OUR WONDERFUL SCHOOL COMMUNITY HAS COLLECTED A TOTAL OF £474 IN MARK'S NAME FOR ST CHRISTOPHER'S HOSPICE.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

OUR FANTASTIC PRIVATE VIEW!

Check out these amazing photos of our glorious, talented and creative artists, photographers and designers - and chefs!

There were SO many other amazing pieces of excellent work.  In September we will show you more! So proud of our amazing talented creatives!

SCHOOL OF ROCK!!!

Here are a few of the photographs that were taken on the night.  It was glorious and a wonderful turn-out, so thanks to everyone for coming  - hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

A HUGE thank you to all the staff, students and parents/carers who helped DG to put this show on. The hours and commitment that went into getting this show together are staggering and this on top of full school days (and weekends)!  You truly are all amazing!

Thanks also to FODG for putting on the refreshments for both the private view and the 2 nights of the show.  You are brilliant!

GARDENING CLUB

OUR GARDENING CLUB ARE 'BLOOMING MARVELLOUS' AND THE TOWER OF LONDON AGREES!

This year our school gardening club has gone from strength to strength with students out in all weathers trying to increase biodiversity in the community.

We were selected to take part in the Tower of London’s Superbloom project and students visited the Tower last week to receive their plaque and congratulations from the senior warders of the Tower.  Most of us kept calm during the ceremony but Harley nearly lost his head!

Thank you Ms Manning and thank you for providing an enrichment club where our students enjoy themselves so much! They love you!

HIGH HOPES FOR OUR Y10 HIGH ROPERS!

Y10 students attended a High Ropes course in Battersea as part of their Outdoor Adventurous Activities unit in Sports Studies.

They were assessed on:

  • Confidently demonstrating a wide range of well-developed, relevant skills and knowledge during an outdoor and adventurous activity.
  • Cares for and uses equipment in an effective way and follows safe practice independently.

All students performed very well, with some students going to the top course showing strong skills and awareness of safety. We are hoping to see some top grades in this section.

Thanks Ms Pritchard.

SCHOOL CAPTAINS ELECTED!

We are excited to announce we have appointed 5 new school captains for the coming year. The Captains will take on a range of responsibilities across the school to represent the student body and lead on important initiatives. All student captains will play a key role in leading the school council which plays an important role in gathering and feeding back student voice to school leaders, teachers and governors. The School Captains will also lead on Mental Health Ambassador Initiatives and in the Eco Committee in our drive to become an Eco School. They will also collaborate together on other projects of their choosing throughout the year.

Congratulations to the following students who led brilliant campaigns and richly deserve their new roles:

Deborah, Milo, Asosa, Wahab & Sheetal.

Thank you Mr Callaghan and Ms Joavel for your work on this.

And finally, as Mr George leaves us, he has at last managed to get a report into the newsletter after months of me nagging him!  Well done Mr George... and thank you! You will be missed.

ANYONE FOR CRICKET?

Last week, Deptford Green played their first cricket match in many years. In a thrilling and closely contested cricket match, Deptford Green faced off against St Mary Magdalene School. It was a nail-biter from start to finish, with terrific bowling performances from Sol, Mikey, and Jevindu keeping the game tight. Dylan showcased outstanding batting skills, giving the team hope throughout the match. Despite their efforts and excellent teamwork and fielding, Deptford Green narrowly lost by just 30 runs.

However, it was great to see everyone participating and giving their best. I know this match marks the beginning of many exciting cricket encounters for Deptford Green to come...

POLITE REMINDER FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOKS

Over the summer PLEASE could you check that any DG library books your child/children has, can you make sure that they bring them back for the September start.  SO many students are holding on to books for far too long preventing other students from borrowing them, so at the beginning of the term it would be lovely to have them all back in and then they can of course, borrow new ones.  Thank you.  Have a happy summer of reading!

Ms Walker

Dear Parents/carers,

Over the last academic year, an Engagement Lead for Kooth has worked closely with staff in school to deliver training on all aspects of how Kooth works and supports your child. As well as all students having the opportunity to hear much more about Kooth, a range of physical and digital promotional resources are being used around school to promote the service & remind students Kooth is here to help 24/7 365 days of the year.

Kooth offers free, safe and anonymous access to online wellbeing support and advice for children and young people aged 10 to 25 across South East London. The registration process is quick, anonymous and safe. Using non-identifiable information, Children and Young People can access support, simply by registering at www.kooth.com.

With no thresholds, waiting lists or referrals required, young people can access support for ANY issues they may be experiencing. These may include; body image, self-esteem, bereavement, academic pressures, anger, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self harm, friendships, sexuality, transition from primary to secondary school etc.

Kooth’s BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) qualified therapists are online 365 days a year. Monday to Friday, from midday until 10pm and on weekends, 6pm until 10pm. Users can also message the team 24 hours a day and receive a next day response.

Young people can access fully-moderated support forums, self-help tools, and online magazine articles (written by our professional team and other users across the UK) covering topics ranging from health and wellbeing, sport, technology, fashion etc. alongside social, emotional and wellbeing support. Everything on www.Kooth.com is pre-moderated before going ‘live’ on the site, allowing for young people to offer and receive peer support in a safe and secure online environment.

Kooth delivers 1000’s of online wellbeing sessions each year in Local Authorities across the UK.  As 50% of referrals to CAMHS are unfortunately deemed inappropriate to their criteria, Kooth gives schools, professionals and families an alternative way of ensuring children and young people can access free support when they need it, in a way that they find comfortable to access, via any web-enabled devices.

Please find a selection of Parent/Carer resources that can be accessed using this link: Parents/Carers resources and If you have any questions or would like to discuss what Kooth.com can offer, please,  simply email parents@kooth.com.

A warm hello to everyone in our school community from Place2Be as we go into our summer break.

Let's acknowledge that while we may all hope for a restful summer break, difficulties may come and they may go, BUT there's always someone you can reach out to for support if things are not quite so restful.

Over the summer, services like Kooth, Shout, Young Minds (and Young Minds for Parents) and Childline are available to students and will offer you a listening space for support. For adults we recommend Samaritans.

Ms Fernandez has kindly found links for support for Spanish speaking students - click HERE and HERE

It has been a pleasure working with you in Deptford Green this academic year, and just simply being among you. We wish you a restful break, and look forward to seeing those of you who are returning to school in September.

Best wishes,

Alison and Lilly: Place2Be School Project Managers
