HEADTEACHER'S KEY MESSAGES

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we begin the final term of the school year, there is so much to celebrate across our vibrant school community.

A huge well done to our brilliant Y8 students on their fantastic exam success— your hard work and commitment have truly shone through and we are incredibly proud of you. Congratulations also to our talented Y11's who have completed their Art GCSE's — your creativity and focus have been inspiring to see.

With exam season now in full swing, we send our very best wishes to all our Y11 students. This is the final big push, and we know how much effort you’ve put in. Keep going — you’ve got this!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the amazing staff who are leading residential trips. Whether it’s exploring history in Berlin or adventuring at PGL with Y7 this week, these experiences create lifelong memories and wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our wonderful staff giving up their time. We are so grateful.

There’s also great anticipation around the corner as we look forward to hearing from our Y10 School Captain candidates when they present to the Senior Leadership Team next week. We can’t wait to see their ideas and leadership in action — watch this space!

As always, this newsletter is full of stories that celebrate the joy of learning, student successes, and the many opportunities that have enriched school life over the past fortnight. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed living it.

Warmest wishes,

Emma Thurston

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT SCHOOL?

AMAZING ART DISPLAYS

Check out some of the beautiful displays Ms Bartlett-Garrard has curated in the foyer!  Our students are truly GREAT at art!

Thank you Ms Bartlett-Garrard

Well done Ky-Mani - we are all so proud of you!

On the 24th April Mr Ramsey took Ky-Mani in Y10 to represent Deptford Green at the Lewisham Regional Final at Prendergast Ladywell School.  Mr Ramsay said this:

It was amazing!

Ky-mani delivered a passionate speech about singing . He started with the question “What does singing mean to you?”

The audience were immediately hooked and intrigued to hear what was to come next. Ky-mani linked it back to when he was in Y7 when he sang in front of an audience for the first time and how it made him feel. He made some historical references as to why black people sang during times of hardship. He mentioned that today, singing allows all cultures to communicate and share their voices. So, what does singing mean to you?

There were 14 participants from 14 different schools from the borough of Lewisham. The winner would enter the grand final and compete against the best public speakers in London and Essex. Sadly Ky-mani did not reach the podium (top 3), but he did deliver a heartwarming and unforgettable speech. Well done, Ky-mani!

Thank you Mr Ramsay.

Between 8:00am and 8:30am, the canteen is open for students to purchase breakfast. Students who are entitled to free school meals can enjoy a free cheese or bacon bagel each day. In addition, newspapers, music, and games are available in the canteen during this time.

AFTER SCHOOL: 15:05-16:15 (16.45 Library) Students taking part in clubs or attending the library after school will be leaving through Student Services.

Summer sun and festivals are here so why not join our Skate Skool, Cricket Club, Gardening Club or our Music Review journalists.

Skateboarding is on Wednesdays in the playground and Cricket Club is on Mondays on the MUGA. Both clubs are delivered by external specialist instructors, entirely free of charge.

We also have a new Italian Club on Tuesdays and an exciting Music journalist club on Fridays.

Science club is continuing in 215 on Mondays.

Our wonderful gardening club is on Fridays in the garden next to the MUGA and Bike shed.

If you want to help make an insect friendly environment and support our little beasts to survive, Gardening Club is for you and combines a passion for our environment with application of your scientific knowledge and a love of fresh food!'

Thanks Ms Nembhard

Y9 FESTIVAL OF CHILDHOOD @ THE V&A

On Thursday 3rd April, Ms Bartlett-Garrard took some Deptford Green to an event collaboration with the Young V&A. The youth-led festival brought young voices and views together with decision makers to share the issues one million children have told the Commissioner, are vital to make England the best place to be a child.

It explored the joy of childhood, from the importance of early years to the skills needed in adulthood, through debate, art and music.

Thanks Ms Bartlett-Garrard

Harley said of the visit:

The Young VNA was an eye-opening experience, giving an insight into the choices made by the government that really affect our lives as the youth of the UK and what we can do to speak up and have a say in what really matters. It touched on sensitive topics such as the sad truths of unsupported young people and had known youth workers come in and join us in a search for answers and showed us the confidence that lies within all of us.

Thank you Harley

Y7 FOOTBALL TEAM DOING US PROUD!

We celebrate the Y7 B-Team victory over St. Joseph's College last week. The boys performed amazingly in the sun, scoring two late goals to win their first game 2-3! Fantastic start boys! Congratulations to Yama, Jayden, Zain, Adam B, Josh, Kester, Naod, Isa, Artin, Toby, Korey, Sam, Klajdi, Ben and King.  What a fantastic team effort!

Thanks Mr Melia

Y11 Geographers - including Milo and Lotte - had the opportunity to visit Kyoto in the West End to explore why it took over 40 years since first discovering climate change, for any policy to be passed setting future targets. Pure political geography at its finest! All students were allocated a country so they had to consider climate change from that country's standpoint.

Thanks Mr Stamp

FIRST GIVE PRESENTATION

On Friday 25th April, our Y8's were completing their presentations for the First Give charity event . The winning group will donate £1000 to Lewisham Food Bank!

Well done to Charlie S, Nehan, Jacob, Safi, Ife and Chardonaye

Thanks Mr Paish

Our wonderful and supportive Inclusion Team have put this together for you to enjoy! Thanks to everyone who contributed.

MEET SOME NEW MEMBERS OF THE TEAM!

Hello all, I am Mr Cregan, I work as a Learning Support Assistant at the school and have a background in drama and acting. After working in a care home and then after time at drama school, I worked as a Camp Counsellor. It became clear that care and education were two key aspects of any role that I wanted to be involved in. I moved to London in late November 2024 and got a job here at Deptford Green! Doing my due diligence and seeing it was a creative arts school and a good Ofsted-rated school, I was pleased to be given an opportunity to work here. I feel very honoured to be a part of the inclusion team and the whole staff body. I very much look forward to getting even more involved with all that is going on at Deptford Green and meeting you all.

My name is Ms Mohammed and as an LSA here at Deptford Green, I assist individuals and small groups within the classroom, adapt resources and offer encouragement to build students’ confidence and independence. I am pleased to be part of a welcoming school community where the majority of students are motivated to learn and staff work together to make a positive difference. After having worked in the primary sector, I can truly say that I have found my calling and I look forward to making an impact in this creative and vibrant school community.

Y10 BUBBLE WORLD TRIP

Staff: Ms Osorio (LSA), Ms Hassen (LSA) and Ms Edwards (LSA)

Students: Noshai, Niang and Florence

We are incredibly proud of our group of Y10 resource base students, who recently stepped out of their comfort zone to attend a special end-of-term trip, recognising their positive efforts and outstanding behaviour throughout the year. The trip was not just a celebration of their achievements, but also a testament to their growth, resilience, and willingness to try new experiences. These students represented Deptford Green with pride, maturity, kindness and teamwork every step of the way. Their participation is a true reflection of the inclusive, supportive spirit of our school community. It was a joyful and memorable day for everyone involved.

LEGO THERAPY HAS BEGUN!

We’re excited to share that our resource base has started LEGO Therapy sessions! This fun, hands-on therapeutic approach, helps students build social and communication skills through teamwork and play. Stay tuned for updates, tips, and success stories as we build together - brick by brick!

Ms Brown – Resource Base Lead LSA

TRY THESE LEGO CHALLENGES AT HOME!

  1. JUST 5 MINUTES! - Give quick build prompts like “Make a spaceship in 5 minutes” or “Build your dream sandwich out of LEGO!”
  2. MYSTERY BAG BUILD -  Put 10 random LEGO® bricks in a bag—pull them out and try to make something from just those pieces!

  3. STORY TIME BUILDS - Build a scene from a favourite book or movie—then act it out with your LEGO characters!

    LITERACY NEWS

Above are images from a literacy bingo session that turned recall into an exciting, interactive challenge! Students rotated around the room, where literacy questions and prompts were posted at different stations. Tasks including decoding riddles and identifying rhyming words as well as recalling storylines before shouting BINGO, made the session exciting, practical and fun. In addition, this session not only strengthened the students’ ability to recall information, it also demonstrated their independent learning skills as they tapped into their prior knowledge.

AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH EVENTS

During the last week of term, our pupils in the Resource Base completed a 5K fundraising walk around Fordham Park. The event was designed to raise money for the National Autistic Society as part of Autism Acceptance Month. The students completed multiple laps of the park and enjoyed the time together whilst celebrating the positive aspects of autism that often go overlooked.

If you would like to contribute a donation, please contact Mx Landon at rlandon@deptfordgreen.co.uk  or Ms Parkinson at mparkinson@deptfordgreen.co.uk

Mx Landon, our Resource Base Lead, also conducted assemblies for Y7-10 about Autism Acceptance. This included voices of our students and what they would like others to know.

KS4 STUDY SKILLS

Our Y11 Resource Base students have been busy preparing for their upcoming GCSE exams.  Thank you to Ms Parkinson, Ms Falkowska and Mx Landon for providing additional 1:1 interventions for English and Maths to ensure our pupils feel ready and confident to tackle the final leg of their secondary school journey!

KS4/3 RB SOCIAL SKILLS

Mx Landon has been working with Y10 Resource base students to support their social interactions during morning break and lunchtimes. Students were allowed to invite one friend to join them in the Resource Base during morning break or lunch. It is wonderful to see that students who previously felt isolated and who would spend breaks alone, are now excited to spend time with their friends in a safe and sensory supportive environment. During these times, we also work on how to navigate friendship issues, how to maintain friendships and how to consider other people’s perspectives and feelings in a social context. Such a great win for our students!

HOMEWORK CLUB

Homework club is open to each year group. The club runs every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 15:00 – 16:00. Ms Edwards, Resource Base LSA, is at the homework club every Tuesday and highlights that it's designed to be a safe, supportive and productive space for students to come together outside of school hours to get help with completing their homework. We are intent on ensuring that students feel welcome and encouraged to improve their academic performance. Also, all the LSA's that run the homework club -  Mr Cregan, Ms Wills, Ms Khan, Ms Mohammed - work hard to create a positive learning environment that helps our students to build good study habits. It is a great way to get additional support so that all students can keep on top of schoolwork!

We are so grateful to all of the LSAs that contribute to the homework club and they in turn, are all incredibly proud of all the students that attend.

Y7 GET INTO THE GREEN

What does a pent-up gymnast say? “I’M GONNA FLIP OUT!”

Shoutout to Lukis on being amongst the top 25 students for attendance and securing themselves a place on the Get into the Green trip to Flip Out in vibrant Canary Wharf. All our students represented the school with the utmost enthusiasm and they thoroughly enjoyed the ride on the DLR.  Lukis kept a brilliant level of composure when finding out that most of the lifts were broken and did not panic (unlike me, the anxious LSA). He especially enjoyed “the prettiest light show” as well as getting to cool off with a refreshing mango ice slushie. Then, as another cherry on top and being the trustworthy student he is, Lukis was allowed to visit the shops and glimpse how the other half lives! Lukis’ comments include: “Why would you pay money to smell like an orange?” and “Who has that much money to buy that jacket?” Afterwards we went on to enjoy the finest cuisine that Greggs had to offer (with the killer combo of a steak bake and doughnut). it was a “10 out of 10 day for sure.”

Thanks again to everyone involved who created an amazing experience for our students.

LITERACY INTERVENTIONS

I am excited to share with you the positive impact of our literacy interventions, an intervention adapted for students who require additional support for their reading and comprehension skills. This term, we have seen a significant impact with the students’ reading ages, attitude to learning and engagement during group discussions.

The literacy intervention is tailored to improve the students’ reading skills, build confidence, resilience and learn coping strategies. The literacy lessons are interactive and engaging, using individual and whole-class reading to build confidence readers. Strategies such as summarising, analysing text, phonics, predicting, critical thinking, grammar, assessment practice using Point Evidence and Explanation (PEE) methods and annotating poems/text will help the students to use their skills across the curriculum.

BUILDING CONFIDENT READERS

Regular reading assessments such as the Accelerated Reader Program help us to monitor the students’ growth and confidence. To help the students to focus on becoming confident readers, reading homework and weekly library lessons have been introduced to the students, so that they can eventually return to mainstream lessons.

SPRING TERM

Last term we focused on the play “Our Day Out” by Willy Russel. The students enjoyed reading the play and putting on accents for the different characters. We spoke about what life was like in Liverpool in the 1970’s and the students were shocked by the lack of technology available, and the treatment pupils received in school. The students learned about the structure of plays, dialogue, stage directions and action.

Focus on our staff star!

Margaret Bosa has worked as a Science Technician at Deptford Green for 20 years! Margaret always greets you with a smile and is a much-loved member of the DG Team.

Last month, we celebrated Margaret's 70th Birthday. Many congratulations Margaret!

GARDENING CLUB

Hephzibah, Poppy, Katie, Harley, Pearl, Maya, Anna, Khadija, Ilia, Nigella and Lina with Ms Manning on a trip out last year.

Gardening Club continues to be popular at Deptford Green. Last year we took part in the Superbloom Project with The Royal Palaces and students travelled to the Tower of London to receive their award from the Yeomen.

Currently we are planting our vegetable patch and sowing seeds for the Summer and beyond.

We are always looking for new student gardeners to work with us on Fridays after school. Please just come along. You will not regret it!

OPPORTUNITY FOR 15+

Y10 Work Experience is Almost Here!

From 19th–23rd May, our amazing Y10 students will be out and about on their work experience adventures! We can’t wait to hear how they’re developing new skills, growing in confidence, and making great impressions on employers across the community (and maybe even beyond!).

Parents, here’s a quick checklist to help make sure everything’s on track:

  • Your child should have brought home a letter with all the placement details—please sign it and send it back to Ms Nembhard if you haven’t already.

  • Has your child contacted their employer to say thank you and introduce themselves? First impressions count!

  • Do you both know the start time and main contact name at the placement?

  • Has your child done a trial run of the journey and saved the address and contact details (or have the letter with them)?

  • What’s the dress code? Most placements are smart casual, but a few might need something specific—double check!

We expect students to show up ready, on time, and enthusiastic—but of course, things can happen. If your child is running late, they need to LET THE EMPLOYER KNOW. And if they’re ill or unable to attend, please make sure both the employer and MS NEMBHARD are informed as soon as possible.

Work experience is a great chance to explore the real world of work and have a bit of fun along the way. Let’s make it a week to remember!

If you have any questions, contact Ms Nembhard on 0208 469 4896 or at cnembhard@deptfordgreen.co.uk (write work experience and your child’s name in the subject box).

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HEAR FROM:

Ofelia and Rafa - who, by the way,  are looking very different now!

Ofelia - Class of 2024. Ofelia is currently studying Spanish, Photography and Film Studies at Thomas Tallis Sixth Form.

Rafael - Class of 2022. Rafael completed his A Levels at Thomas Tallis Sixth Form (with the highest grade in Drama ever!) and currently wrapping up his final project on the Foundation Art Course at Ravensbourne University. He is planning to embark on a degree in Character Design and Concept Art at Ravensbourne and has secured an offer from all the universities he applied to.

We are immensely proud of you and love hearing of your progress.

If, like Ofelia and Rafa, you are a creative and want to take part in summer school, and explore Ravensbourne in Greenwich), check these here (for students 16+): Summer School (including Media, Fashion, Architecture and Graphic Design)

TO OUR ALUMNI:

Hope you’re doing well – and surviving adulthood better than your old school timetable ever prepared you for!

If you have already signed up to our Alumni Network, it’s brilliant to see you are still keeping an eye on what’s happening here. We love that you are part of the community.

If you’ve got two spare minutes (maybe while waiting for the kettle to boil?), we’d really appreciate it if you could pop in, sign into your profile, and give it a little update. We’d love to know where life’s taken you – work, studies, epic gap years, business ventures, world domination… we’re genuinely interested in it all.

Plus, the more you share, the more we can celebrate your wins and help inspire current students with real stories from real legends (that’s you).

Thanks so much – and looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to!

If you have not signed up yet, you can do it here now -  click HERE

Thanks Ms Nembhard
