KEY MESSAGES

Dear Wonderful Deptford Green Community,

We wish you all a fantastic break and whatever you do over the holiday, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, we hope that this will be a time of great peace, health and happiness for you and your families.

We are so very proud of our school; our students, their parents and carers and our hard-working and dedicated staff, and as this 2 week break is just beginning, we hope you will enjoy reading in this newsletter, just a small sample of what we have been up to over the last couple of weeks!  As always, there has been A HUGE amount going on so not everything is included here, but the 'Get Into The Green' Rewards trips were enjoyed by so many and the Staff Panto went down EXTREMELY well with our students! The atmosphere was completely buzzing!  Let us just say that Mr Lambert, amongst others, may have missed his true calling.

Sadly, as we ended the term, we said goodbye to a few members of our staff team and as they leave us, we wish them well in their future endeavours, whether that be retirement or on to pastures new! Thank you to all of you for all your hard work and dedication.

Finally, a reminder that students are back in school on Tuesday 7th January. Gates open at 8.15 and school starts promptly at 8.40am. We look forward to seeing them all ready to jump eagerly into Spring Learning!  (See what we did there?!)

See you in 2025!

Goodbye to Ms Forrest (Maths), Mr Jones (Head of Y10 & Drama Teacher), Mr Williams (LSA)

HOT CHOCOLATE FRIDAY

On Friday the 6th December, Ms Thurston treated the 'Turning of the Year Choir' to Hot Chocolate all round! What a fantastic start to the day and what a fantastic group of students involved! Well done everybody.

FRIENDS OF DEPTFORD GREEN - WE THANK YOU!

A big thank you to Dr Rudolf Van Koningsveld for always showing up and on this occasion, helping to sell refreshments at the Y11 Parents Evening, charmingly helped by Kioni (Y7) and her little sister!

Also thank you to Nannette who has kindly volunteered to be in charge of Pre-loved uniform and who helped out last Friday (and has done so on several occasions previously). Watch out in the New Year for our upcoming Online shop where you should be able to buy our Pre-loved uniform online and collect from reception.

Finally, thank you to all the wonderful parents who stepped up and helped sell refreshments at the Christmas Showcase last Tuesday.  Sadly, I meant to get a photo of you all together to put here but it was so successful and BUSY (there were queues!), that I didn't manage it (watch out next time) but you are wonderful and we couldn't do this without you! Alongside our parents, our Food Tech students made some amazing finger foods to sell on the night, and it really was tasty food!

One parent said that at their other child's school, "they don't do anything like this and that it's fantastic to be able to get refreshments at events - it's made it a real night out for us!" so well done FODG!

Thank you to Ana, Nancy, Jo, Manon, Morgan and Paula and our Food Tech students and Mr Djordjevic. We look forward to developing the group even further in the New Year and holding more activities.

Y7 HISTORY TRIP TO THE BRITISH MUSEUM

On Thursday 12th December, Mr Woodgate took some Y7's to the British Museum to see the Roman Empire Exhibition. They also visited the Sutton Hoo burial collection which was very exciting because they have been studying the Anglo – Saxons in class. They particularly enjoyed the 1600 year old sword and helmet!

Thank you Mr Woodgate! This looks like a wonderful trip and these Y7's are having such a great start to their DG career! (Will keep Mr Sinclair happy!) Well done everybody.

Thank you Mr Curran.

CAREERS NEWS FROM MS NEMBHARD

Y9 READY TO TAKE ON THE BUSINESS WORLD WITH KINDNESS & TOGETHERNESS!

Y9 students visited EY in Canary Wharf to explore different careers, particularly in Business and Finance, and develop their key skills and had enormous fun in the process!

Students were introduced to different roles and had the opportunity to network with professionals from the consultancy firm before taking part in a fast-paced, hands-on business challenge and team-building activity. Well done Y9's!

Here are some of their comments:

“The EY trip was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed doing some new work and learning new skills and the staff we met were all so sweet and kind. I liked learning about their job and experience and the Origami business game we played. I would definitely do it again!”

“ I really enjoyed developing my teamwork and confidence and loved the Origami Challenge and found it so fun. I am proud of our togetherness when we were doing it and I would definitely go again!”

“During the EY Trip, I was able to try new experiences and use techniques and skills like togetherness, teamwork, leadership and communication to achieve our goals and have fun.”

“It was such a fun experience. I enjoyed the teamwork, talking to the people there and 100% do it again ??”

“The EY Foundation visit was so fun. I loved everything about it: the teamwork, introducing myself to the volunteers and the view from the 20th floor is so nice and the people are so kind. Definitely would come back!”

The volunteers remarked how much fun they had themselves and what a brilliant group our Y9 students have been and commended them for their fantastic communication skills and creative negotiation techniques… a team even burst into song to secure a deal at the best price!

We are immensely proud of every single student who attended the visit and look forward to another visit in the future.

SATURDAY CLUBS:  HAVE FUN, MAKE FRIENDS, GET CREATIVE, GO BEYOND CLASSROOM LEARNING ... ALL FOR FREE!

We are delighted to share this invitation from our friends at London Screen Academy to join their Film & Screen Saturday Club.

It is a fantastic opportunity to learn about all aspects of film making, from scriptwriting to costume design, budgeting and camera operating and more.

Young people will create their own film, have fun and make new friends and it is also an excellent way to prepare for their work experience and post-16 options.

See more information and applications - click HERE

Saturday Clubs are free and support might be available for transport cost. London Screen Academy is looking forward to seeing lots of enthusiastic and creative storytellers joining the club.

Do not hesitate to contact Ms Nembhard at cnembhard@deptfordgreen.co.uk if you have any questions or would like support with Saturday Club applications.

Other Saturday Clubs are available such as THE SOCIETY & CHANGE SATURDAY CLUB at The National Army Museum, PERFECT for students interested in Arts, History, Politics, Citizenship and Sociology. Again, young people will learn new skills, build up their confidence and meet new people.

The theme for this club is to consider how art, culture and memory shape attitudes towards war and conflict.

Young people will also have the opportunity to create their own artistic responses that will be displayed as part of the Summer Show in Somerset House. How amazing!

You can apply here National Army Museum - National Saturday Club and they would love to see Deptford Green students taking part as well as some Y10 applying for work experience!

A MESSAGE FROM PLACE2BE

TO OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY...

Dear Staff, Parents and Students,

Let's acknowledge what a busy and seemingly long term it has been.

Slowing down can be hard when we have spent so long being occupied and busy. Slowing down can bring unwelcome thoughts and feeling states that we do not notice when we are busy and distracted.

There is always support available:

Place2Be Suggested Support Sites click HERE

Big or small, the challenges children face can feel overwhelming to them - and to us as parents, too. The good news is, with the right tools and support, children can learn to cope, bounce forward, and thrive.

This month’s Parenting Smart update is packed with practical advice to teach children to cope in healthy ways, whether it’s helping with a meltdown over homework or supporting a child through something much bigger.Click HERE to learn more about helping children handle life's ups and downs...

We hope these resources will be helpful in supporting you and your children’s mental health. We wish you all a good Christmas break and a Happy New Year! See you in January 2025.

Best wishes, Alison and Lilly: Place2Be School Project Managers

Alison & Lilly - we thank you for all you do for our students, parents and staff, especially when they are going through difficult and challenging times and you are there supporting us all.  Thank you! You are amazing.

CHECK OUT WHAT YOUR CHILDREN ARE EATING AT SCHOOL!

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we finish the Autumn term, I want to say a HUGE well done to the school community. The whole school attendance is 93.5%, this is above the national average for attendance which is currently 92.4%.

It is important that we continue to work together to build on this good work and encourage your children to attend school as much as possible. THERE IS A STRONG, PROVEN LINK BETWEEN SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND POSITIVE LIFE OUTCOMES.

I want to remind parents that you need to contact the school for each day of absence, e.g. if your child is unwell for 3 days, you should contact the school each day.

A reminder that school returns on Tuesday 7th January 2025.

I want to wish you all a lovely break and a happy new year!

Best wishes,

Jack Bannon: Deputy Designated Safeguarding and Attendance Officer

WINTER FOOD & FUN

MESSAGE FROM KOOTH MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Dear Parents/Carers,

With the winter break fast approaching, at Kooth Digital Health we appreciate there will be some young people who may struggle during the holidays without the access to the daily pastoral support, trusted adults and friends that the school community provides. Equally, seasonal illness and the closure of many services at this time of year can lead to extended wait times across both adult and young people's NHS and community services.

WE ARE STILL HERE!

For this reason I thought it may be worth highlighting to students and the school's parent body that our services remain open for them to access at any time over the winter period.

Click HERE to see a video about access to their services

Kooth Digital Health offers free and anonymous therapeutic mental health and wellbeing support to young people in South East London aged between 10-25. Funded and endorsed by the NHS, our services remain available over the winter period, offering ‘on the day’ wellbeing support from the comfort of your own home, via any web-enabled device via the following website-  www.kooth.com

Kooth offers free access to online text-based practitioner chats, self help tools and activities, journal spaces and advice from our non-judgemental, safe and moderated peer:peer communities.

With no threshold, waiting list or referral process, young people in Lewisham can access support for ANY issues they may be experiencing. These may include; body image, self-esteem, loneliness, bereavement, academic pressures, stress, anxiety, friendships, sexuality, life changes etc.

The registration process is quick, anonymous and safe, simply by registering at www.kooth.com using non-identifiable information.

Kooth delivers 1000’s of online wellbeing sessions each year in Local Authorities across the UK.  As 50% of referrals to CAMHS are unfortunately deemed inappropriate to their criteria, Kooth gives schools, professionals and families an alternative way of ensuring children and young people can access free support when they need it, in a way that they find comfortable to access, via any web-enabled device.

If you have any questions regarding the service, please contact our safeguarding team or Kooth directly, simply email parents@kooth.com. A selection of Parent/Carer resources can be accessed clicking HERE
