The English as an Additional Language (EAL) department’s aim is to support and extend the language development of all bilingual/multilingual pupils. For early stage language learners, we endeavour to equip them with basic literacy skills through an intensive induction programme. For more advanced language learners, we support them in their mainstream classrooms in order to ensure that they can fully access core National Curriculum subjects, particularly in English, Mathematics, and Science.

Support within the EAL department

For students who are new to the UK we have developed a support system which we hope will help the students to settle in as quickly as possible:

  • On arrival: The students have a brief assessment of their English and Maths skills so that we can see how best to support them. We try to place the students according to their academic potential and previous educational experience.
  • Buddies: new students are introduced to a buddy in their tutor or year group who look after them while they settle in. The buddies show their new friends around the school and take care of them during breaks and lunchtimes so that they are never alone.
  • EAL Staff: The new students are introduced to the EAL staff who will be working with them. As well as developing and improving their use of English, we attach great importance to the students' well-being. We work from a room which is usually open to students before school, at break time and lunch time.
  • Types of Support: Support is offered at a range of levels, and individual needs are taken into account. Depending on their level of English, students may receive weekly individual, or small group lessons to develop fluency in reading, writing or speaking, whereas more advanced EAL learners are usually supported in mainstream lessons such as English, Maths, and Science. All students receive support in our EAL Homework Clubs, at lunch time and after school.
  • Valuing students' first language: Home languages of EAL students are valued and, where possible, the students are encouraged to sit GCSE, A Level examinations in their mother tongue. The languages our students have taken so far include Polish, Russian, Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and Turkish. We co-operate with other local schools to extend the number of languages which we can offer.
  • Extra-curricular activities: It is important for us to encourage our students to take part in a variety of extra-curricular activities. We organise educational visits to museums and other institutions around London.
  • Support in Exams: If the student has been in England for less than two years they may be allowed to have 10% extra time in their exams, and to use a bilingual dictionary (for most subjects). Students can also have access to a supported small room rather than sit in the main exam hall.

EAL Curriculum

Beginners Induction Programme (Foundation and KS4)

Newly arrived English beginners attend an intensive induction programme for five lessons per week. A beginners’ induction programme is designed to provide pupils with the basic skills necessary for participation within the mainstream. The programme covers basic functional skills as well as topics within the NC strands.

Withdrawal Groups (Foundation and KS4)

Having successfully attended the Induction Programme, pupils attend three timetabled sessions to receive help immediately linked to materials covered in English as well as Maths and Science, or intensive English as a Second Language lessons – depending on their English level. The EAL specialist pre-teaches work to be covered in mainstream lessons.

KS4 Advanced EAL pupils

International GCSE in English as a Second Language:

IGCSE English as a Second Language is a GCSE course for the more advanced EAL pupils. The course is an international English language examination for foreign language speakers offered by Cambridge International Examination Board (CIE).

A grade ‘C’ is accepted by most British universities for entry requirements. It is suitable for students who already have a reasonable foundation in English. It is language based and reinforces the GCSE English course. Other areas targeted include: grammar, idiomatic language and vocabulary enrichment.

In Year 9 students follow a course to help them improve their literacy in English. The essentials of grammar, skills and vocabulary are presented through contemporary topics in a flexible, one-stop component with plenty of practice and review materials to help build the students’ confidence.

In Years 10 and 11 pupils are taught functional skills needed for the IGCSE examination; these skills include note making, summary writing, form filling, listening, reading, writing and speaking. There are three papers: Reading & Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Entry to this examination gives EAL students the opportunity to gain an additional English language qualification while at the same time reinforcing the literacy skills students need in their mainstream GCSE English lessons.

Mainstream Lesson Support (Foundation and KS4)

In addition to the above teaching groups, the department also provides language support for bilingual pupils with EAL needs within mainstream lessons. Through partnership and support teaching a variety of differentiated learning resources can be introduced increasing access for targeted pupils to the curriculum.

First priority for mainstream support is given to KS4 students in English and Science in order to allow them to achieve GCSE grades in these subjects. Other subjects include Humanities and Maths. The department’s next priority is support in KS3 English sets.

Community Languages – GCSE and A Level Language Exams

EAL pupils that are proficient in all 4 language skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening - in their home language are prepared for their first language GCSE and A Level exams in liaison with community/supplementary schools, the EAL Consultant and the EAL Coordinators’ network in Lewisham.

Unfortunately, not all languages are offered at GCSE or A level. Pupils are still encouraged to attend community/supplementary schools in order to maintain good literacy skills in their first/home language.

In the EAL department we believe it is essential that we promote our pupils’ linguistic capital as well as offer them the chance to leave school with an extra GCSE, or even an A Level, qualification – in most cases proficient pupils can achieve high grades with minimum effort.
